635483637590237620-scheer-moon  The Downing Planetarium (5320 N .Maple Ave.) will host a free telescope viewing of the total lunar eclipse from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27.

The Central Valley Astronomers will provide the telescopes and lend expertise to the attendees, and the Fresno State Physics Outreach program will show hands-on demonstrations.

The rare total lunar eclipse, known as a blood moon as it turns dark red, will last for about one hour and 12 minutes.

The planetarium will have two special showings before the start of the eclipse at 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Reservations for those programs are online at www.fresnostate.edu/csm/downing-planetarium/public-request.html and tickets are available for purchase at the door (adults $5, seniors  $4, Children/Students $3).

Free parking will be available next to the planetarium in lots P15 and P16. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets to the event.
