The Cesar E. Chavez Garlanding Ceremony will be held Wednesday, March 3I — the anniversary of the late farmworker union leader’s 72nd birthday — in the Peace Garden at California State University, Fresno from noon to 1 p.m.

The public is invited to the free event sponsored by the Cesar E. Chavez Celebration Committee and the City of Fresno’s Human Relations Commission.

Individuals are encouraged to bring flowers for the ceremony, said Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor, professor of peace and conflict studies at Fresno State and a commission member.

The Fresno State Peace Garden holds a life-size bronze statue honoring the memory of Chavez, who founded the United Farm Workers Union and served as its president until his death on April 23, 1993. He was born March 31, 1927.

The Peace Garden, located between the Henry Madden Library and the Psychology/Human Services Building, was established in 1990 with the installation of a bust of Mohandas K. Gandhi at the west end. The 9-1/2 foot by 3-1/2 foot statue of Chavez, by artist Paul Suarez of Roseville, was dedicated in 1996 and stands at the east end. A sculpture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was erected in January at the north side, just a few yards west of Gandhi.
