Semana de la Raza, weeklong festivities at California State University, Fresno
commemorating the Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, will be held May 3 through May 7.
The holiday observes Mexico’s victory over French forces in Puebla, Mexico on May 5, 1862 and is celebrated throughout Mexico and the United States.
At the Fresno State celebration, each day of the week features culture, social or educational tributes and activities with an emphasis on community involvement, said student organizer Lucia Aguilar. This year’s activities are (more details will be forthcoming):
Monday, May 3 — Dia de la Raza Indigena. TRIBU, a native band, will perform at 11 a.m. in the Free Speech Area.
Tuesday, May 4 — Dia de la Mujer Xicana. Workshops regarding Latinas’ roles in society will be held. Tina, a local rap artist, will perform at 10:30 a.m. in the Free Speech area.
Wednesday, May 5 — Cinco de Mayo Tardeada. Music and food booths will be featured from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Free Speech Area with performances by the new California State University Mariachi and a local dance group, Los Ninos de Aztlan.
Thursday, May 6 — Dia de Los Ninos. Local elementary school dance groups will perform traditional cultural dances culminating with a celebration of pinatas. The program will begin at 9 a.m. at the Satellite Student Union.
Friday, May 7 — Xicano Youth Day and Noche de Cultura. High school students will visit the campus and be given tours in an effort to provide them motivation to obtain a higher education. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., a celebration of Mexican culture through artistic expression will be held in the Satellite Student Union.
