Kim Peek, the man who was the inspiration for the 1988 Oscar-winning movie, Rainman, will be the guest speaker at a luncheon Friday, May 28, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Foundation Conference Room at California State University, Fresno,

The event is co-sponsored by the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at Fresno State, the Mayor’s Committee for the Employment of People with Disabilities, and the Heartland Opportunity Center.

Also speaking at the luncheon will be Peek’s father, Fran Peek, who authored the book, The Real Rain Man. The book was inspired by his son’s life. The movie featured Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise.

Mayor Jim Patterson will also attend the luncheon, said Charles Ariokasamy, coordinator of the Rehabilitation Counseling Program.

Ariokasamy said Kim Peek, who is diagnosed as a megasavant, was born with fetal brain damage, which affected his motor sensors. However, he has the capability of total recall and remembers almost everything he has read since age three.

The Peeks are traveling through the United States, bringing Kim’s message to over 800,000 people: “Learn to recognize and respect differences in others, and treat them as you would like them to treat you. This will help give us the kind of world we hope for. Share, care…be your best.”

Tickets for the luncheon are $18.95 per person with seating limited to 70 people. Following the luncheon, Peek will participate in a question and answer session, and his father Fran will be available to

sell and sign copies of his book.
