Horses trained through the equine program at California State University, Fresno will be auctioned at the Spring Production Sale on campus Saturday, June 19.

The yearling, 2-year-old and 3-year-old “equine graduates” can be previewed at 10 a.m. in the Animal Science Pavilion located on Barstow Avenue between Chestnut and Maple Avenues. The sale begins at noon.

“These horses have been handled, broke and trained through our equine program,” said Dr. Anne Rodiek, professor of animal sciences and supervisor of the program. “Students work with them at all levels, from conception in the breeding program to a finished riding horse as the end result.”

Most of the horses being auctioned have completed more than a year of training by students and staff of the equine program. “It takes a lot of work to get them all ready,” said Leean Nounnan, assistant technician of the program and graduate student. “The horses being auctioned are working-type ranch horses — they are being trained for reining and cutting and a few might be pleasure horses.”

Rodiek said the program enrolls about 10 students per semester, and they help with the breeding and the foaling of ranch horses as well as with the training.

Most of the horses to be auctioned on Saturday are Fresno State raised, Rodiek said. However, to spice up the sale, she said outside horses have been consigned as well.

“Variety attracts people, and we are offering 15 young horses from our program,” said Rodiek. “The 2- and 3-year-olds are broke to ride and the yearlings are gentle.”

The sale is also featuring 2- and 3-year-olds by Hot Chocolate Chex, a champion reining, halter and pleasure horse. Yearlings and 2-year-olds by Pavo De Peppy, Doc’s Buckeye, Count Cedar Bars, Mito Commander and Jack Be Super are also consigned to the sale.

In addition to the auction, Rodiek said the public is invited to visit the equine program just west of the Animal Science Pavilion where the university is standing a variety of stallions.
