Engineers at the mall exhibit Feb. 24 and 25 marks 50th anniversary of engineers week

The “Engineers at the Mall” exhibit will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, and Sunday, Feb. 25, at Fresno Fashion Fair as part of the 50th Annual National Engineering Week observed by California State University, Fresno.

The mall exhibit, co-sponsored by the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Engineering Students Joint Council and Associated Students, Inc., runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science also announced its annual awards banquet will be Thursday, Feb. 22. The banquet dinner and program begin at 6 p.m. at the University Piccadilly Inn on Shaw and Cedar avenues.

This week, Fresno Mayor Alan Autry issued a proclamation commemorating the exhibit and National Engineer Week, announced Dr. Karl Longley, dean of engineering and computer science at Fresno State.

National Engineering Week is sponsored by professional engineering organizations and is designed to increase public awareness of engineers’ contributions to the quality of life as well as encourage young students to pursue careers in math, engineering and science, Longley said.

“Engineers at the Mall helps provide information and contact opportunities with engineer professionals and students,” said Longley.

The weekend exhibit will feature displays of university student engineering projects. Students from various disciplines of the college of engineering and from companies involving several engineering fields will provide information about their professions and academic preparation for a career in engineering.

Displays will present pictures of engineering projects and engineering professionals in action. Students and company personnel also will be available to answer any questions.

Two other events the college also will participate in are “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” on March 3 at College of the Sequoias in Visalia with a special program for girls (K-12) and their parents to explore engineering and computer science, and the first Alumni Golf Tournament, set for May 18.
