California State University, Fresno President John D. Welty today (Aug. 27) announced members of the committee that will initiate a national search for a new athletic director to replace Al Bohl, who left in June to become athletic director at the University of Kansas.

Chairing the 12-member panel will be Dr. Benjamin F. Quillian, vice president for Administration, who was selected as leader by the group at its first meeting today. Quillian is also chairman of the board of directors of the California State University, Fresno Athletic Corporation.

In addition to Quillian, other committee members appointed by the president include Dr. J. Michael Ortiz, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; Nick Dvorak, president of the Bulldog Foundation; Maxine McDonald, director of the Educational Opportunity Program; and Dr. Katherine Adams, Department of Communications professor. Adams also is an Athletic Corporation board member.

Faculty members selected by the Academic Senate are Dr. William R. Fasse, associate professor, Department of Child, Family and Consumer Sciences; and Dr. Michael D. Botwin, associate professor, Department of Psychology.

Others serving will be Department of Kinesiology chair Catherine Jackson and head coaches Daniella Irie, swimming; and David Chesler, soccer.

Cathie Salanitro, administrative support coordinator in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Educational Technology, will represent the Staff Assembly and Associated Students Inc. President Ryan Jacobsen will represent students.

Welty said he expects to name a new athletic director in early 2002.

In July, the president named associate athletic director Scott L. Johnson as interim athletic director until a replacement for Bohl is named.
