RSVP for the wine tasting by Dec. 25

Silicon Valley-bound Red Wavers who will spend part of their holidays at the Silicon Valley Football Classic in San Jose on Dec. 31 will close the year with quite a bang given all the bowl activities available to them.

Silicon bowl events range from seeing if the Red Wavers — for the second year in a row — can yell louder than people traveling all the way from Michigan at a 1.6 million square-foot shopping mall to ringing in the New Year fresh, hopefully, off a football bowl victory.

Prime among bowl events next weekend on Saturday night (Dec. 29) is the California State University, Fresno Alumni Association’s pregame reception — not for a football game, but for basketball since the hoop ‘Dogs happen to be playing in San Jose.

The no-host reception will be held in the Doubletree Hotel two hours before the 7:30 p.m. basketball tip off Saturday night. No admission cost for the reception — just show up ready to be a spirited “two-sport Red Waver.”

But prior to that, Fresno State’s Spirit Team and the Bulldog Marching Band will take on their Michigan State counterparts Saturday afternoon in a Pep Rally face-off at the Great Mall at 4 p.m. Fans will head out there and help spirit boosters win the first battle of the weekend! Bulldog football players and coaches will be there looking for the Red Wave’s support.

On Sunday afternoon (Dec. 30), Fresno State’s Ag One Foundation will hold a wine tasting for $45 per person in the Doubletree featuring Fresno State’s award-winning wines and winemaster Kenneth Fugelsang. But you must RSVP by Dec. 25! Call 278-8603.

Then it’s GAME DAY!

A tailgate party by the Quarterback Club kicks off Bowl Day on Monday morning (Dec. 31) at Spartan Stadium. Happy Red Wavers can get a BBQ grill fired up just like that any time of the day….even 9 a.m.! Tickets are $25 …call 278-DOGS for yours.

The big day — not to mention the whole year – will be capped with a New Year’s Eve party by the Silicon Bowl in the Doubletree but sorry… that one is already sold out! At least Fresno State’s 500 ticket portion is, says Leticia Reyna, Alumni Association assistant director.

And … if you still need some excitement that weekend before the big ball drops at midnight to ring in 2002, there is even a football game being played in Spartan Stadium at noon on Monday (Dec. 31) when the Bulldogs battle the Michigan State Spartans. Check it out … if you have time after such an action=packed year-ending weekend!
