The 21st Annual African American Student Recruitment Conference will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning in the Satellite Student Union (2485 E. San Ramon Ave.) at California State University, Fresno.
The registration deadline is Jan. 29. The free conference, sponsored by University Outreach Services, begins with registration at 8 a.m.
The keynote speaker will be Daren Miller, principal of Carver Academy Middle School in West Fresno Elementary School District.
The conference is open to all middle school, high school and community college students and their parents. A college fair, workshops and a talent hour are part of the day’s lineup.
The conference will begin with performances by the Fresno State Gospel Choir and include a college fair, workshops and talent hour. The talent hour will feature several performing artists from the local Fresno area, as all ages will be represented.
Workshops will cover such topics as financial aid, survival strategies for higher education, scholarships and admission. Special sessions for parents will cover issues related to college preparation.
Tawanda Bowers-Hall, event chairperson and a University Outreach Services counselor, said the purpose of the conference is to motivate students to achieve their maximum potential and prepare for the future through higher education.
