University High School has been invited to compete as a “Wild Card” team at the California State Academic Decathlon Finals on March 12-13 in Sacramento.

The UHS team earned the bid by earning the 9th highest score in the state at countywide competition.

Stephen Ho, a senior, won the Dean’s Award at the Fresno County competition for the high overall point total of 8,912, which was the highest score in the country. It was his second Dean’s Award and the first time in the history of the county event that the same student has won that award two years in a row.

John Dawson and Noreen Clark, who scored first and second highest in the Speech category.

University High team members are Carson Baucher, junior; Doug Witt, senior; John Dawson, junior; Peter Guekguezian, senior; Anthony Lowe, senior; Noreen Clark, senior; David Wrapp, senior; and Erin Wichert, junior. Sean Canfield is the coach.

The eight schools with scores higher than UHS in the state standings are El Camino (Los Angeles Unified), Taft (Los Angeles Unified), Edison (Fresno), Simi Valley (Ventura), Beverly Hills (LA County), Marshall, Reseda and Granada Hills.

University High, a charter high school offering an accelerated, college preparatory program for students with experience in musical performance, is sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities and located on the Fresno State campus.
