Riley Walter and Gregory Powell of Walter Law Group will present a workshop on “Protecting, Licensing, and Selling Intellectual Property” March 19 at California State University, Fresno.

The workshop, hosted by the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, in the University Business Center, room 194. The fee is $20.

The focus will be on how to develop, protect and gain value from intellectual property local companies may have.

“How one protects his or her idea is as important as establishing and creating the idea,” says Dr. Timothy Stearns, director of The Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The workshop on intellectual property will provide participants with hands-on knowledge on how to create value for their ideas and make sure the ideas can be protected as the business model unfolds, Stearns added.

For businesses today, protection of new ideas and innovations by way of patents, copyrights and trademarks, collectively deemed intellectual property, is critical for survival. Smaller companies, in particular, must protect their new ideas and innovations to increase their financial worth and, hopefully, compete with larger businesses

“An idea loses its value unless the owner of the idea can protect it,” Stearns said

“Ideas are the foundation of entrepreneurship. The ability to own and protect an idea is what has made this country unique, and of course has fostered more innovations in the history of mankind.”
