Fresno State students selected to explore the topic of “From Tension to Reality: Food Systems for Our Future” at a national food and society networking conference sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation on April 20-22.

Raul Leal, a sophomore from Fresno majoring in biology, and Nubia Guzman, a junior from Fresno majoring in consumer sciences, are among 35 students nationwide who will travel to Olympic Valley, Calif., to take part in the “Building Local Agriculture Systems Today (BLAST) with the leaders of tomorrow portion of the conference.

“I’m excited to go because it pertains to my major and will help me learn about food science and how we can improve it,” said Guzman.

At the conference, participants will explore new ways to create future food systems that provide for all segments of society a safe and nutritious food supply grown in a manner that protects health and the environment and adds economic and social value to rural and urban communities.

Attendees will hear diverse perspectives on food, health and cultural heritage; environmental stewardship; economic viability of food and agricultural enterprises, social justice and the food system; and the links between food, health and ag policy.
