University Statement: Terry Pettis was permanently suspended from the Fresno State men’s basketball team in February 2004 as the result of ongoing disciplinary problems. Pettis had a series of ongoing and increasingly serious disciplinary problems that led to the men’s basketball coach removing him from the team. He withdrew as a student on April 15, 2004.

Chronology

Sept. 25, 2003 — Pettcharges,nded indefinitely after an off-campus incident on Sept. 24.

Oct. 8, 2003 — Pettis remains suspended after entering a no-contest plea to two misdemeanor charges.

Oct. 15, 2003 — Fresno State men’s basketball coach Ray Lopes issues statement that Pettis will remain indefinitely suspended from all basketball-related activities.

Oct. 24, 2003 — Lopes announces Pettis reinstated for practices only.

Nov. 1, 2003 — Pettis takes leave from team for what Lopes terms “personal reasons.” Although not formally released, Pettis’ leave is to run through at least early December.

Nov. 22, 2003 — The Fresno Bee reports Pettis has checked himself into a 30-day impatient program for substance abuse.

Dec. 20, 2003 — Pettis returns to practice after the WAC grants him a medical waiver. Dec. 22, 2003 — Pettis returns to the lineup.

Feb. 5, 2004 — Lopes benches Pettis during a game.

Feb. 6, 2004 — Lopes suspends Pettis from the team for the remainder of the season. Feb. 27, 2004 — Lopes removes Pettis permanently from the team

April 15, 2004 — Pettis withdraws as a student at the university, formally ending his ties to California State University, Fresno.
