CSU Summer Arts 2004 will feature public performances and readings in experimental narrative, books as visual objects, and children’s books when the four-week program launches later this month.

Four guest artists will teach a workshop, “Experimental Narrative,” with each conducting a free reading for the public:

• June 29 — Raymond Federman, French-born novelist and poet, whose work has been translated into fifteen languages and has been adapted into radio plays and dance performances; will read and discuss his works. TIME/LOCATION: 8 pm at the Conley Lecture Hall (5225 N. Backer). Free.

• July 1 — Mark Amerika, a “Time Magazine 100 Innovator” and author of two cult novels, discussing his work and digital art. TIME/LOCATION: 8 pm in the Concert Hall (2380 E. Keats Ave.). Free.

• July 6 — Camille Roy, reading from two manuscripts exploring the intersections of politics, criminality, and sex on. TIME/LOCATION: 8 pm in the Concert Hall (2380 E. Keats Ave.). Free.

• July 8 — Leslie Scalapino, whose work is characterized by an interest in extreme emotional states, depictions of human behavior in animalistic terms, outrage at social injustice, and an artfully disjointed style in which dashes interrupt unfinished thoughts. Reading from her works. TIME/LOCATION: 6:30 pm in the Conley Lecture Hall (5225 N. Backer). Free.

Two guest artists from the workshop, “The Book as Visual Object,” will speak about book arts:

• July 12 — Daniel Kelm who employs progressively more specialized traditional bookbinding techniques and is known for his innovative structures and extensive knowledge of materials will discuss his one-of-a-kind books that are in public and private collections worldwide. • July 19 — Tim Ely, an internationally known artist, designer, and educator, will discuss his art books based on an interest in art, UFO images, alchemy, science, comic books, and odd religious arcane that led him from painting and design into

The CSU Summer Arts Workshop, “Writing the Worlds of Childhood: The Art of Writing for Children,” will bring several children’s writers to Fresno, two of whom will make public presentations:

• July 13 — Janet Wong, whose books reflect the rich diversity of contemporary American culture with their appeal to a wide range of readers: preschoolers who love to make buzzing sounds, teenagers fixated on driving, and grandparents who like to tell their own stories about growing up. Book reading. TIME/LOCATION: 7 pm in the Lyles Gallery at the John Wright Theatre (5201 N. Maple). Free book reading. NOTE: erroneous time is listed in Events Calendar.

• July 21– Ruth Sanderson has illustrated books for children of all ages, from Golden Books to young adult books, and classics such as Heidi and The Secret Garden. TIME/LOCATION: 7 pm in the Lyles Gallery at the John Wright Theatre (5201 N. Maple). Free book reading.

In addition to the performances listed in the Events Calendar — a free booklet listing all events now available to the public — CSU Summer Arts will co-host with the Arne Nixon Center two special programs:

1) On Saturday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Smittcamp Alumni House (2635 E. Keats), the public is invited to a workshop called “Path to Publishing” where participants will be able to hear from a children’s writer, a children’s publisher, and an agent. Lunch is included and the cost is $30. For reservations, call 241-6090.

2) On Monday, July 19, at 7 p.m. at the Fig Garden Swim and Racquet Club (4722 N. Maroa), young adult authors Chris Crutcher and Terry Davis will have a reading and discussion, followed by an ice cream social. It is free, but reservations should be made by calling 241-6090.
