Chair of Philosophy Department and professor of Religious Studies option courses. Expert in modern religion. Degrees from Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley S.T.L.; Graduate Theological Union M.S./ Ph.D.

Dr. Terry Winant, Dept of Philosophy 278-3631

Involved in Interfaith Alliance. Knowledgeable about various issues facing Fresno area faiths, including issues involving Roman Catholics and the Papacy.

Dr. Mark Aryaniqian — History Dept. professor 278-2297

Expertise in Medieval History. The Church plays a significant part in his research — the development of Latin Christian tradition and its Church, from earliest days to about 1600.

Dr. Maritere Lopez — History Dept. professor 278-2601

Teaches Renaissance and Reformation Studies. Can speak on the papacy as an institution. Her expertise is grounded more in the early modern period but notes that Pope John Paul II’s conservative policy represented a shift back to earlier philosophies. Can also offer perspective what this means in the current selection process.

Tom Ebert – Modern European History 278-3027

Master’s degree in Modern European History. Ebert is knowledgeable about the Papacy including traditions, customs, succession. Can provide interesting facts in general as well as perspective on the succession process itself, both historically and presently — ex. why the papacy was held by an Italian and whether that could resume. Knowledgeable about individual popes. (Ebert is Fresno State’s associate vice president for academic personnel.)
