The American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) at California State University, Fresno will host the ASME West Coast Human Powered Vehicle Challenge for the first time April 29 to May 1.

More than 200 mechanical engineering students from universities around the nation will swarm the Fresno State campus in human-powered vehicles.

Built and designed by teams of students, these vehicles will race in timed sprint and endurance races at various locations on the university campus throughout the weekend.

They will be judged on sophistication and innovation of design, presentation, practicality, performance and safety, said Maria Sanchez, mechanical engineering associate professor.

“Human powered vehicles are aerodynamic, highly engineered modes of transportation that can be used on land, water or in the air,” Sanchez said.

Admission is free and volunteers are invited to participate in running this event. For information about ASME or the event, visit http://hpv.engr.csufresno.edu or contact Sanchez. at (559) 278-5589.
