President John D. Welty will announce the name of the university’s top student and present the prestigious President’s Medal to her or him at California State University, Fresno’s 95th Commencement ceremony Saturday, May 20, at 10 a.m, at the Save Mart Center at Fresno State.

The President’s Medal winner is selected from among the nine undergraduate Dean’s Medalists, chosen as the outstanding students in each of the university’s eight schools and colleges of academic discipline and the Division of Student Affairs. The dean of each selects an undergraduate medalist based on academic excellence, community involvement and other outstanding achievements.

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY

Robert L. Rumble

B.S. Plant Science

Robert L. Rumble completed his B.S. in Plant Science, Plant Health option, with a 3.86 GPA. He was one of two students to receive the 2005 California Association of Pest Control Advisers scholarship. Rumble volunteered for L.A.M.B. Services, which collects and ships food and clothing to the needy worldwide. He plans to earn his pest control adviser and certified crop adviser licenses and work for his father’s agricultural consulting company.

Matthew Ragan

B.A., Theatre Arts

Matthew Ragan completed his B.A. in Theatre Arts with a 3.75 GPA. He has acted, danced, choreographed, produced and/or served as a technician in numerous Theatre Department productions. Ragan’s work has been recognized by the American College Theatre Festival and the American College Dance Festival. As a teacher and counselor last summer for the Upward Bound Program in New Hampshire, he worked with first-generation college students in performing arts, movement and Web design.

Kevin S. Cooper

B.S., Business Administration — Finance option

Kevin S. Cooper completed his B.S. in Business Administration, Finance option, with a 4.0 GPA in three years of study. A member of the Bulldog football team, he was the top academic performer for his three years of play and was named to the Academic All-WAC team for the 2004 season. A frequent volunteer at Children’s Hospital Central California, Cooper conducted a marketing and recruitment campaign for the Boys2Men/Girls2Women Foundation. He is enrolled in the Craig School’s M.B.A. program and plans to attend law school.

Casia Butler

BA., Liberal Studies

Casia Butler completed her B.A. in Liberal Studies with a 3.89 GPA. A Smittcamp Family Honors College scholar, she is the first in her family to earn a college degree. Butler worked at the Huggins Toddler Center on campus and as a respite caregiver. Actively involved in community service, she volunteers one or two weekends a month in church projects. This spring she completed her final student teaching in a sixth-grade class at Mulcahy Middle School in Tulare.

Jonathan D.K. Visitacion

B.S., Computer Engineering

Jonathan D. K. Visitacion completed his B.S. in Computer Engineering with a 3.9 GPA. He is a Smittcamp Family Honors College scholar, a member of Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society),

Eta Kappa Nu (Electrical Engineering Honor Society), Golden Key International Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Visitacion is a church youth adviser, a volunteer at Stone Soup of Fresno and a counselor at a summer camp for Asian-American youth. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in computer engineering.

Garrett Kitt

B.S., Nursing

Garrett Kitt completed his B.S. in Nursing with a 3,75 GPA. A Navy veteran, he is a husband and father who is actively engaged in family life. He is involved with the California Nursing Students’ Association and was invited to be inducted into Gold Key National Honor Society. Kitt volunteered with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the American Heart Association’s Women’s Day and a variety of health-focused events targeting children and adults. He is employed by Children’s Hospital Central California in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Susan Andrea Look

B.A., Chemistry

Susan Andrea Look completed her B.A. in Chemistry with a 3.82 GPA. She is the recipient of the Kenneth W. Chan Memorial Scholarship, the Floyd R. Burke Scholarship and the Tokalon Scholarship. Look was an officer in Caduceus and the Chemistry Club. She worked as an academic research associate at University Medical Center and as a research assistant in the chemistry lab at Fresno State. She will start medical school in the fall at either USC or Loma Linda University.

Anne Visser

B.A., Anthropology, Political Science, Deaf Education

Anne Visser completed three B.A. degrees — in Anthropology, Political Science and Deaf Education — and a minor in Armenian Studies, while maintaining a 3.82 GPA. She is fluent in American Sign Language and speaks and reads Dutch and Armenian. Visser works as a program specialist at the Fresno County Office of Education and as a special education advocate at the Fresno Unified School District, She volunteers at Ronald McDonald House. She plans to complete a master’s degree in political science at Fresno State and then pursue doctoral studies.

Jennifer Reimer

B.S. Business Administration

B.A. Music Performance

Jennifer Reimer completed her B.S. in Business Administration and her B.A. in Music Performance with a 3.6 GPA. She is the 2005-06 Associated Students president, and also served as a senator and vice president of finance. A Smittcamp Family Honors College scholar, Reimer has helped raise money for Children’s Hospital Central California and St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis. A clarinetist, she performed for five years in the President’s Quintet, helped promote the annual West Coast Clarinet Congress and performed at local schools to promote music awareness and raise funds for school music programs.

Pedro Hernandez

Pedro Hernandez completed his M.S. in Plant Science with a 4.0 GPA. He is the youngest son of a farmworking family of 12. He is skilled both in the laboratory and in the field and has been an intern for Bayer Crop Science and a research scientist assistant for Syngenta Crop Protection. Hernandez’s thesis research was on control strategies for the black widow spider in vineyards. He is working as a field development representative for Nichino America, an agricultural chemical company.

Lejla Tricic

M.A., English — Literature option

Lejla Tricic completed her M.A. in English, Literature option, with a 3.94 GPA. A refugee from Bosnia 13 years ago, she entered Fresno State in 1998 and was selected as a dean’s medalist as an undergraduate in 2001. Tricic has worked as a teaching assistant at Fresno State and an instructor at the Clovis College Center. Her writing has received attention from notable scholars, doctoral programs and publishers and she has been asked to contribute to an anthology to be published by Cambridge University Press. Tricic’s thesis was on postcolonial theory implicit in the works of Victorian novelist Charlotte Bronte. She is also working on her M.F.A. in Creative Writing

Jennifer C. Guzman

Master of Business Administration

Jennifer C. Guzman completed her Master of Business Administration with a 4.0 GPA. While working as a sales representative in the pharmaceutical industry, she pursued her dream of earning an M.B.A. When Guzman’s father was killed in a plane crash, she honored his work ethic by finishing her culminating project, an alternative investment business plan with detailed analysis for the drug industry that reflected recent changes in the Medicare prescription program.

Vianney A. Luna

M.S., Rehabilitative Counseling

Vianney A. Luria completed her M.S. in Rehabilitative Counseling with a 3.98 GPA. Twice the recipient of a Graduate Equity Fellowship, she has presented her research at national and regional conferences and is preparing two manuscripts for refereed journals. Luna’s research examines the incidence of disabilities among immigrant and limited-English-proficient welfare-to-work participants. She mentors two minority women, volunteers at her son’s school and is active in research, assessment and professional development. She plans to seek a Ph.D. and, eventually, a faculty position.

Anusha R. Bhoi

M.A., Engineering — Electrical Engineering option

Anusha R. Bhoi, an international student who did her undergraduate work in her native India, completed her M.S. in Engineering, Electrical Engineering option, in summer 2005 with a 3.6 GPA.

Bhoi impressed faculty members with her hard work and dedication and her success in teaching a freshman design lab, For her master’s project, she designed and implemented architecture for the Advanced Encryption Standard. She works for Kawasaki Microelectronics in San Jose in high-performance integrated circuit design.

Lana Xiong

Master of Social Work

Lana Xiong completed her Master of Social Work degree with a 4.0 GPA. She is the sixth of seven children of Hmong refugees from Laos who were raised by their mother after their father’s death. She worked in Mastering the Master’s Program Tutor Services and was selected by the campus Learning Resource Center to attend professional tutoring training. Xiang is active in the Asian Social Work Organization at Fresno State and a member of the Hmong Young Women Support Group. She volunteers with Stone Soup of Fresno and Pan Valley Institution and is an advocate for Fresno’s Southeast Asian families.

Justin A. Costa

MS., Biology

Justin A. Costa completed his M.S. in Biology in summer 2005 with a 4.0 GPA. He has presented his research at national and international meetings. Costa received the College of Science and Mathematics Faculty Sponsored Student Research Award and an Associated Students Grant. He received the post baccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award from the National Institutes of Health, where he is a fellow.. He completed his thesis in angiogenesis and has been accepted into an M.D./Ph.D. program.

Edgar L. Castillo

M.A., History

Edgar L. Castillo completed his M.A. in History with a 4.0 GPA. A son of Guatemalan immigrants, he speaks Spanish, Estonian and Russian, and studied German. He is a McNair Scholar, who has presented several papers, including one at the American Association for the Teaching of Slavic and East European Languages. Castillo spent two years in Estonia as a community volunteer and is an accomplished musician. He has been accepted into the doctoral program in Russian Literature at the University of California, Berkeley, and was awarded the Eugene Cota Robles Fellowship.

Roberto C. Vaca

M.S., Counseling — Counseling and Student Services option

Roberto C. Vaca completed his M.S. in Counseling, Counseling and Student Services Option, with a 3.63 GPA. A McNair Scholar, he has been involved in numerous research projects and professional presentations. Vaca was a member of the planning team at the American Humanics Management Institute in Atlanta and a presenter at the Western Psychological Association in Phoenix. He was the first chair of the Student Subcommittee of the Alcohol Advisory Council at Fresno State and received the 2005 Student Leadership Award at the California State University Alcohol Conference. He plans to work as a high school guidance learning specialist and then begin doctoral studies.
