Free College Foundation gives Madden Library DVDs of 'The Music Room' television series

The Fresno Free College Foundation has given the Henry Madden Library at California State University, Fresno DVD copies of “The Music Room,” a foundation-produced series of television programs that aired in the 1970s and ’80s.

The library’s Music & Media collection previously had only videocassettes of the 23-program musical performance series that featured university faculty and students and local and visiting musical artists. The shows were hosted by the late Philip Lorenz, a Fresno State professor of piano and musical director of the Keyboard Concerts series that now bears his name.

The Fresno Free College Foundation, born of the free speech movement on campus in the late 1960s, produced “The Music Room” at Fresno State; at KMPH, Channel 26; and at KVPT (then KMTF), Channel 18. The first broadcast aired in 1978 and the last in 1989.

“The gift of these DVDs is a valuable addition to the library’s collection,” said Janet Bochin, who is in charge of the Music & Media Library. “The DVDs will better preserve these important performances for future viewers and save valuable shelf space over the larger VHS tapes.”

The Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts series begins its 35th year in the fall with performances on campus. The Fresno Free College Foundation, which founded the Keyboard Concerts, also operates KFCF, FM 88.1, the Valley’s Pacifica radio affiliate.
