Criminology chair named Navy Preceptor of Year

Steven D. Walker, professor and chair of the Criminology Department at California State University, Fresno, recently was named Preceptor of the Year by the Navy and Danya International Inc., for consulting with the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program at Lemoore Naval Air Station.

Walker developed an assessment tool to evaluate drug use and post traumatic stress disorder. He also assisted in developing new procedures for programs that have low staffing levels.

Walker is one of about 50 preceptors (mentors and leaders) who consult at Navy facilities throughout the world. He has administered and consulted with alcohol and drug counseling programs for 30 years and has been a preceptor for more than 10 years.

Walker first served on the Fresno State faculty form 1989 to 1992 then re-joined in 1998. He was named Criminology chair in 2003.
