Daniel Van Dongen, a master’s degree student in occupational therapy at California State University, Fresno, plans to pedal away from Florence, Ore., on June 3 for the 4,000-mile Journey of Hope bicycle ride to Washington, D.C., to help people with disabilities.

The fund-raising trip is a program of Push America, part of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity’s philanthropy and its effort to teach what the fraternity describes as “a life lesson on acceptance and understanding of our fellow Americans with disabilities.”

The Fresno State graduate has been training for the trip and raising the $5,500 to which he committed as part of the 85-member team participating in the Journey of Hope ride.

1 am excited to be able to spend my summer traveling the United States raising funds and awareness on behalf of people with disabilities,” said Van Dongen, who expects to ride into the nation’s capital Aug. 12.
