California State University, Fresno will host several programs for children this summer. Academic-oriented programs are in reading, inventions, science and nutrition, while sports camps will teach the fine points of football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball and track and field.

The Division of Continuing and Global Education – Extension Programs offers Science Adventures day camps 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday for children in K-6 grades.

The sessions are:

June 25-29, Gizmo’s Gadgets and Goop: Children will explore the secrets of batteries, bulbs and buzzers, make ice cream without a freezer and discover how the Wright brothers conquered the sky. Class number: 50156

July 9-13, Go Wild: Participants will receive a hands-on experience investigating extreme plants and animals. Class number: 50154

July 16-20, Mystery of the Pharaoh’s Treasure: While building a rock and crystal collection and investigating the secrets of the sands, children will solve an Egyptian mystery. Class number: 50155

July 30-Aug. 3, Space and Rocketry ’07: Participants’ voyage of discovery will include exploring the secrets of Mars, making a Mars rover, creating telescopes, charting constellations, meeting meteorites and looking for sun spots. Class number: 50157

Registration before May 15 is $245 per child per camp. Discounts are available for multiple camps per family. Registration May 16-June 1 is $259, and after June 1 is subject to availability at $269. Camp fees include a T-shirt, Friday lunch, and one child’s admission ticket to the Downing Planetarium on campus.

KIDS Invent! (559.294.2045)

One-week camps feature activities designed to foster creative thinking, inventing and entrepreneurial enterprise through hands-on learning that designing and building mockups of toys. During development, participants make presentations to the teacher and work with other children in a variety of tasks. At the end of the program the children get to keep their inventions.

These Craig School of Business-related camps are offered 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily June 18-22, toys; June 25-29, beginner videos; July 9-13, robots; July 23-27, advanced videos.

Before May 15 the fee is $250 per camper, increasing to $275, which includes all materials, snacks, use of computer labs and a T-shirt.

Classes for all ages will be offered on campus. Sessions are scheduled Saturdays and Sundays for children age 4 through grade 8; and on Sunday and Monday afternoons and evenings for grades 9-12, college students and adults.

The individual fundamentals and techniques camp will be held June 8-10. The cost is $200 for a commuter camper and $300 for an overnight camper.

Girls and boys basketball camps (call 559.278.6061)

The Fresno State women’s basketball team is hosting a girls and boys camp June 18-22. Session I is from 9 a.m. to noon for grades 1-6. Session II is from 1 to 4 p.m. for grades 7-12.

The camp will be held July 6-8 for teams with up to 12 players. The fee is $450 for one team and $800 for two teams.

Camps are designed for female and male volleyball players entering grades 4-12 to develop the main skills in volleyball (passing, setting, hitting, digging, serving and blocking) in a fun and positive learning environment.

Bulldog Boys Camp: 1:30-4:30 p.m. July 21-23 for boys entering grades 7-12; $95 per camper.

Bulldog Girls Camp: 9 a.m.-noon July 23-27 for girls entering grades 7-12; $175 per camper.

Junior Bulldog Camp: 1:30-4:30 p.m. July 24-26 for girls and boys entering grades 4-6; $95 per camper.

The Fresno State Soccer Academy for boys and girls ages 6-13 offers instructional exercises intended to enhance the player’s technical and tactical development. Players will be confronted with challenging game situations that allow for each player to have maximum ball contact and decision-making opportunities. Summer camp dates are:

Session 1 June 11-14 – Boys and girls ages 5-9, 9 a.m.-noon.

Session 2 June 11-14 – Boys 10-13, 5-8 p.m.

Session 3 June 11-14 – Girls 10-13, 5 p.m.-8 p.m.

Session 4 July 9-12 – Boys and girls 5-9, 9 a.m. to noon.

Session 5 July 30-Aug.1 – Team camp, 5-8 p.m.
