The Central California Engineering Design Challenge 2007 – involving more than 200 college engineering students — will be hosted 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 3, by California State University, Fresno.

The competition, which will be held in the South Gymnasium, is free and open to the public.

Students will compete for school teams trying to outwit and outsmart each other for the title of BEST (Brightest Engineering Student Team).

In addition to Fresno State, participants come from Visalia’s College of the Sequoias, Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Center, Bakersfield College and Antelope Valley College.

Teams will design a car with compact discs as wheels. The team with the car that goes the longest and straightest with the help of a ramp 2 feet high is the winner. Working together in teams to solve a challenging design problem prepares the competitors, who are primarily freshman engineering students, for challenges they will face in the real world.

The event began 10 years ago as a way for students to compete and have fun with engineering. Two schools and 50 students participated, but word spread and more teams signed on over the years.

The event is sponsored by The Gas Company, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy (NYSE symbol: SRE), and the nation’s largest natural gas distribution utility. The Gas Company provides energy to 19.5 million consumers in Central and Southern California.

“The Gas Company recognizes what a vital role math, science, and engineering play in the economics and development of the Central Valley, and we look forward to working with Fresno State to promote engineering education,” said Colby Wells, public affairs manager for The Gas Company.
