University Police Department personnel at California State University, Fresno participated in an Active Shooter Training Scenario on Friday, Jan. 11.

Scenarios consisted of an active shooter in Graves Hall, a residence hall on campus, as well as a hostage situation in the Atrium Courtyard. Approximately 40 staff and students assisted, role playing as victims and witnesses.

For each scenario officers stood by on the east side of campus and calls were dispatched of a reported shooter in Graves Hall, which is on the west side of campus.

After each scenario a debriefing was held to talk about the situation, decisions that were made and critiques of skills.

“This is a great experience for our department, to work together and get to train with local agencies,” said University Police Department Lt. Lupe Canales-Shrum. “The more practice we get, the better we can handle this type of situation on our campus.”

The day’s activities were the conclusion of a three-part training staged by Clovis Police Department for UPD and Fresno Police Department.
