A preview of spring 2008 events will highlight the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s (OLLI) Kick-Off/Bring a Friend Event on Thursday, January 24 at the Satellite Student Union. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. and will include refreshments and a performance by Fresno State’s Protean Visions musical quartet. A short presentation will outline OLLI general sessions, short courses, and field trips scheduled for the spring semester. Topics include love in early Christianity, food safety, neuroscience, jazz, cotton in the valley, photography, the 2008 elections, art history, William Saroyan, and the Middle East, among others.

Featured speakers include Honora Howell Chapman, Fresno State associate professor of Classics and Humanities and coordinator of the Classics Program; Charles Boyer, Fresno State dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology; Kathryn Wage, speech pathologist; Jean Pennycook, science educator; and Bruce A. Roberts, Fresno State J.G. Boswell, Endowed Chair in Plant Science.

On April 23, there will be a musical performance by Jazz Band “A,” under the direction of Michael Caldwell, 2007 CMEA Central Section Jazz Educator of the Year.

Also offered is a series of short courses. The courses include, but are not limited to, “Photography and Its Roots in the Visual Arts” by Douglas Deteringer; “Classical Myth and Literature” by Linda Cano; and “Español for the Novice by Cathleen Colby.

Field trips to the opera, to Getty Villa in Malibu, and to Fresno’s Arté Americas Museum are also available. For those who are interested in travel study, there is a 12-day program to Greece and other destinations.

Fresno State’s OLLI is among 114 such institutes founded at universities throughout the United States. It offers lectures, workshops, short courses, and field trips to adults age 50+ who wish to continue learning and exploring for the sheer joy of it. A semester membership is $55 per person for a General Membership and $15 per person for an Associate Membership.
