California State University, Fresno President John D. Welty told returning faculty and staff at the Spring Assembly, “Our mission of achievement is firm and our region will become stronger and better because of the work that takes place on this campus.”

During his speech today, Welty noted numerous recent accomplishments by faculty members; green campus initiatives; the new Master Plan awaiting final approval of California State University Trustees; and fundraising successes.

He also announced formation of a Centennial Committee headed by Fresno County Superior Court Judge Robert Oliver that will formulate plans for the university’s 100th anniversary in 2011.

Welty reported that some preliminary recommendations of the new Gender Equity Task Force are being implemented with additions to the women’s intercollegiates sports lineup in the fall. He said the commission he appointed on Athletics Finances is about to report its recommendations for changes that will bolster a new era in Bulldog Athletics.

Taking note of the state budget crisis and associated difficulties ahead, Welty expressed confidence, saying, “There will doubtless be challenges in our future, but the key is how we respond and what we learn from them.”
