The Classics McClatchy Endowment at California State University, Fresno will sponsor a lecture on Thursday, March 13, featuring Professor Emeritus of Classics Dr. Victor Davis Hanson and a reading in Latin on April 15.

Hanson will speak on “The Road from Marathon to Anbar” at 7:30 p.m. March 13 in the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center located in the Student Recreation Center (Shaw and Woodrow avenues). It is free and open to the public.
Hanson, a noted military historian and author, co-founded Fresno State’s Classics Program and helped bring it to national prominence before retiring in 2004. Since retiring, he has been the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

Last November, he was one of 10 individuals and foundations to receive a National Humanities Medal from President George W. Bush at a White House ceremony.

Hanson joined the Fresno State faculty in 1984 to initiate a Classics Program. He is the author of hundreds of articles, book reviews, scholarly papers and newspaper opinion pieces on matters ranging from Greek, agrarian and military history to foreign affairs, domestic politics, and contemporary culture.

On April 15, Mark Miner will wear a toga and recite, in Latin, from Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” at 5:30 p.m. in the Alice Peters Auditorium of the University Business Center.

Miner is a professional reader specializing in Latin and Greek literature; his credits include recordings for the popular Athenaze Greek text, online audio for Wheelock’s Latin, and numerous performances throughout North America.

Miner has organized performances of the numerous classic poems in the original languages, in costume, including Homer’s “Iliad” and Vergil’s “Aeneid.” In 2003, Miner was awarded first prize in Greek and third prize in Latin at the New York Classical Club Oral Reading Competition.

In addition to performing, Miner has taught at California State University, San Diego and La Jolla High School. He has also taught at Heritage Christian School in Oregon and Smokey Road Middle School in Georgia.
