Lt. Gov. John Garamendi joined California State University, Fresno President John D. Welty, student leaders and faculty marking the first anniversary today (April 16) of the tragic killing of 32 Virginia Tech students and faculty.
In a ceremony at Fresno State’s Virginia Tech Memorial Garden, where plantings replicate Virginia Tech’s maroon and orange colors, Welty concluded his remarks by saying, “It is a time for each of us at Fresno State to consider how we can best set an example of peacefulness that will resonate through our families and our friendships out into the community we are all trying to improve.”
He also noted that even when tragedy strikes on other campuses, the Fresno State campus community comes together to offer its assistance there and to anyone affected by the losses.
Garamendi struck a similar note in his comments, saying recent violence on campuses across the nation has focused attention on the need for vigilance to prevent recurrence. He also said that universities should be places of intellectual stimulation and free from fear.
Joining Welty and Garamendi in making remarks were Kathy Paez, student director of USU productions, and Stephen Trembley, Executive Vice President of Associated Students Inc. Both remembered the shock of the Virginia Tech shootings upon Fresno State students.
Dr. Ira Sorensen, a professor of mechanical engineering at Fresno State and Virginia Tech alumnus, read the names of the 32 who lost their lives last April 16 in Blacksburg, Va. His wife Dr Maria Sanchez, also from the Virginia Tech Class of 2002, led students, faculty and staff in placing flowers in remembrance of each of the victims.
Paez and Welty placed a wreath atop the boulder in the memorial guarden where a plaque pays tribute to those who died.
After the wreath was placed, the crowd of faculty, staff and students stood silently in reflection as the Fresno State carillon played “Amazing Grace” to conclude the ceremony.
