One year ago today, our campus community – indeed, the entire nation – was deeply shocked by the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech.

On that day, the lives of 32 students and faculty members ended.

Death has great resonance. Not only did those individuals die, so did their dreams and also the dreams their families and friends had for them.

On that day, university communities throughout our country were shaken that violence could so invade the peace we usually enjoy on campus. We like to think we’re a haven from the rest of the world – a place to pursue knowledge and better ourselves.

We are committed to ensuring that all who come in contact with Fresno State will see – and be – examples of the best in humankind, not reflections of the ugliness in our society that often gets too much attention.

Sadly, less than a month after Virginia Tech’s most painful moment, tragedy struck near our own campus. I’m sure you all remember that a former student died after a shooting incident in an off-campus apartment where many of our students live.

Earlier this year, at Northern Illinois University, another shooting reminded us again of our vulnerability.

Our hearts have been heavy this past year. But I believe a fitting tribute to those who died is seizing this opportunity not only to pay tribute, but also to look forward with renewed resolve.

It is a time to remind ourselves how important universities are to our society.

It is a time to pledge ourselves to protect the free exchange of ideas and the search for knowledge by continuing our efforts to provide the safest campus environment possible.

And it is a time for each of us at Fresno State to consider how we can best set an example of peacefulness that will resonate through our families and our friendships out into the community we are all trying to improve.

Now I’d like Dr. Sorensen to give us the names of those students and faculty lost at Virginia Tech. After that, we will lay a wreath at our memorial plaque and I ask that we all join in a few moments of reflection as the campus carillon plays “Amazing Grace.”
