The Bulldog Chop Shop in the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market at California State University, Fresno featuring fresh meats is open and ready for weekend and Memorial Day barbecues.

Also at the market, the popular Fresno State Winery wine-tastings are expanding to Saturdays and Sundays beginning next week.

The market at Chestnut and Barstow avenues will be open on Memorial Day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 7 pm; Saturday, 9 am to 6 pm; and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm.

During the summer, the fresh meat counter will be open Thursday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with different specials offered each week. This week, lamb and ground round are featured.

Next week, the Chop Shop will feature fresh German sausage and boneless pork loin. On May 30, samples slow-cooked in the Food Processing Department’s student-developed Mole BBQ sauce will be served.

This week’s wine tasting today (Thursday) and Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. will feature the 2006 Barbera, 2006 Muscat Canelli and 2006 San Joaquin County Chardonnay.

Cost is $5 and tasters are given a complimentary Fresno State wine glass to sample the three university wines poured by viticulture and enology students.

Beginning May 31, wine tasting hours at the market will be extended through the weekend and special discounts will be offered. The new tasting hours are Thursday and Friday, 4 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sweet corn and extra virgin olive oil, two popular Farm Market products grown and processed by students on campus, will make their 2008 debut late next week. The Gibson Farm Market also has a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables available. Customers may visit the Farm Market Web site for updates.

Proceeds from the market help strengthen farm operations and agriculture programs at Fresno State, said Dr. Ganesan Srinivasan, director of the University Agricultural Laboratory (university farm) which consists of 25 enterprises including the Gibson Farm Market.
