With the San Joaquin River as the backdrop and the sounds of jazz by student musicians from California State University, Fresno, the annual Ag Boosters Barbecue Sept. 7 will feature student-produced food, including award-winning olive oil, sausage and wine. The event is from 4 to 8 p.m. with a buffet dinner will be served 5:30-6:30.

The Ag One Foundation and California Women for Agriculture (CWA) host this fundraiser at Rancho Vista del Rio at the San Joaquin River and Highway 99. Proceeds benefit students and programs in Fresno State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology and CWA’s educational efforts.

Student-produced almonds, raisins and grapes will be served and the CWA will host a “country store” with handmade arts, crafts and baked goods. Live and silent auctions will feature weekend getaways and unique items, and there will be a drawing for a vacation package that offers the option of time in Hawaii, Florida, Alaska, Mexico or Italy.

In its 31 years, the barbecue has raised more than $610,000. Since 1979, Ag One has provided some 2,900 students with more than $1.9 million in scholarships and grants. Another $5 million is endowed with the Fresno State Foundation. In the 2008-09 academic year, $220,000 will be awarded.

CWA uses funds raised to help tell the story of California agriculture through education and legislative programs and by awarding nearly $100,000 in scholarships annually.
