The Fresno State football team along with the Fresno State management students have partnered with the Community Food Bank to show their commitment to fight Valley hunger. For Saturday’s homecoming game against Idaho, Bulldog fans are encouraged to bring a non perishable food item to the game. Monetary donations are also encouraged, as $1 equals eight pounds of food.

“The Central Valley is experiencing a hunger epidemic and community partners, like Fresno State, are partnering with us to ensure that no child goes unfed,” Community Food Bank CEO Dana Wilkie said. “With an unprecedented need for food, Community Food Bank is distributing about a million pounds of food every month; an increase of almost 50% from last year. Food drives, like the one at Fresno State, make it possible for us to meet this increased need.”

The food drive is taking place all week at Fresno State, with donation barrels available around campus. On Saturday, there will be several barrels located outside the four main entrances of Bulldog Stadium as well as in the gray lot, purple lot and near the Save Mart Center lots. Volunteers in bright green shirts will be located at each stadium entrance and in various locations in the parking lots to help fans turn in their donation.

A collection bin will also be made available inside the northwest entrance of the Save Mart Center on Saturday for the 2 p.m. Fresno State volleyball match.

Along with the Community Food Bank and the Fresno State football team, Fresno State Department of Management and the Sierra-Pacific Orthopedic Center are also volunteering their time to make this year’s food drive happen.

“Given the state of the economy, the hunger problem in the valley is even more critical,” said Department of Management Chair Julie Olson-Buchanan. “Our students and faculty welcome the opportunity to team up with the Fresno State Football Team and Sierra Pacific Orthopedic Center to help the Community Food Bank gather more food to feed the hungry in our community.”

Since 1992 the Community Food Bank has been feeding the hungry in the Central Valley. Today, they service more than 170 agencies and more than 46,000 individuals on any given week.
