A free financial education workshop for educators who work with at-risk young women and girls will be offered by California State University, Fresno on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The university’s Center for Economic Research and Education of Central California will host the conference, with support from the American Association of University Women and the College of Social Sciences.

Teachers and others who educate and mentor at-risk young women and girls in a variety of settings are invited to attend the session from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Smittcamp Alumni House at Fresno State.

The workshop will be based on a new financial education curriculum – “Financing Your Future” – developed by the National Council on Economic Education. It uses short videos and active learning exercises to introduce young people to the basics of personal finance. The workshop will address the following themes:

  • “Get a (Financial) Life,” which introduces basic vocabulary and key concepts such as savings and the importance of “spending less than you earn.”
  • “Get Smart: Decisions Have Consequences,” which covers trade-offs and opportunity costs related to both small and large decisions.
  • “Get Banked: The Banking Advantage,” which illustrates how vital it is to have a banking relationship and reveals the high costs of being “unbanked.”
  • “Get the Credit You Deserve,” which aims to demystify credit and debt, showing the benefits of smart credit decision-making and understanding concepts such as credit scores.
  • “Get a Financial Plan,” which stresses the importance of budgeting and planning, saving early and often, and important concepts such as compound interest.

The workshop will be lead by Dr. Janice Peterson, a Fresno State Economics Department faculty member who has extensive experience promoting economic/financial literacy and the status of women and girls. For more information, contact her at: japeterson@csufresno.edu or 559.278.2673.
