Two dates have been set for César Chávez Day of Service Learning holiday observances at California State University, Fresno.
A campus community observance will be held March 24 and will include the traditional garlanding of the Chávez monument in the Peace Garden, just north of the Henry Madden Library. The event includes entertainment and art exhibits.
The date was selected because the Fresno State campus will be closed March 29-April 2 through a combination of the annual spring break from classes, furloughs for employees mandated by state budget cuts and the Chávez holiday on March 31.
Chavez, who helped organize farm workers in California from the 1960s until his death in 1993, was born March 31, 1927.
The César Chávez Education Conference will be held April 30 and May 1 at Fresno State. The conference brings parents, students, educators, policymakers, community leaders and researchers together to discuss educational reform and social justice issues.
Both events are free and open to the community.
