An estimated 1,300 California State University, Fresno students and employees staked out campus locations and campus-area street corners before dawn Tuesday, March 9, to sell Kids Day editions of The Fresno Bee to benefit Children’s Hospital Central California.

In 2009, more than 1,000 Fresno State students, faculty and staff raised over $30,000 selling the $1 Kids Day Bees, said Renee Delport, special events and project coordinator for the university’s Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning

The overall 2010 goal for Kids Day was $400,000 in sales, down from the $427,000 received in 2009 purchases from 4,000 volunteers in Fresno, Tulare, Madera, Kings, Merced and Mariposa counties.

The Kids Day edition, which includes a separate cover section with stories about patients the hospital serves, its staff and growth plans, plus coupons, is sponsored by The Bee and ABC30. In the previous 22 years, Kids Day has raised more than $3.4 million for the hospital in Madera County.

Although sales on the street are for one day, $5 donations are welcome via cell phone by texting the word “George” to 9-0-9-9-9.
