Student actors at California State University, Fresno University Theatre present are taking audiences to 19th century North Carolina’s remote “Heathen Valley,” where bringing the word of God is a full-contact sport.

The curtain rises on “Heathen Valley,” the Department of Theatre Arts’ second spring 2010 production, at 8 p.m.

Friday, March 12, at the Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre in the Speech Arts Building at Fresno State. The production runs through March 20; dark March 15. Curtain is at 8 o’clock each evening and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 14 .

Romulus Linney’s “Heathen Valley” is based on his novel of the same name about an Episcopal bishop’s desire to bring his faith to a remote, untamed valley full of brutal violence and grinding poverty. The stage adaptation has won the American Theatre Critics Association Award for Distinguished Playwriting.

The play is directed by theatre arts professor Brad Myers, with scene design by Jeff Hunter, lighting by Izzy Einsidler and costumes by Elizabeth Payne.

Tickers are $17 for general admission; $15 for Fresno State faculty and staff and Alumni Association members; and $10 for Fresno State students with valid student ID,.
