Celeste Pilegard, a junior psychology major and member of the Smittcamp Family Honors College at California State University Fresno, is the 2010 University Student Volunteer of the Year.

Pilegard has volunteered with both on- and off-campus organizations.She is a leader and founding member of the student-run Bulldog Pantry, a Richter Center Ambassador and a volunteer who has provided many hours of service to other projects. In addition to her volunteerism, Pilegard maintains 3.89 GPA.

Pilegard and other community volunteers were honored April 21 at the Hands Across the Valley Awards hosted by HandsOn Central California.

Two Fresno State student finalists, Melissa Watkins and Jennifer Ervin, also were commended by Fresno State Vice President for Student Affairs Paul Oliaro at the awards ceremony.

Watkins is a senior psychology major whose volunteer work includes the Leadership Program at Fresno State, Fresno Survivors of Suicide Loss and the Bulldog Pantry. She also serves a Richter Center Ambassador.

Ervin is a senior communications major who has a 4.0 GPA. Her volunteer efforts include working with the grassroots social justice organization Straight Advocates for Equality. She is a founding member of the group that works to educate the community and advocate on behalf of the LGBT community in Fresno.
