The California State University, Fresno chapter of the Alpha Zeta honorary agriculture fraternity won the 2010 Founders Cup and the National Outstanding Officer of the Year at National Agriculture Leadership Conference.

Ten Fresno State students represented the Cal Epsilon chapter of Alpha Zeta at the conference April 8-10 in Brunswick, N.J.

The Founders Cup – Alpha Zeta’s top honor – is awarded to the chapter that best exemplifies the principles of the fraternity including scholarship, leadership, fellowship and character.

Sergeant-at-arms Jason Ferreira, an ag education major from Tulare, received Officer of the Year recognition for his dedication and leadership and his commitment to improving the chapter and building on the principles of the fraternity.

“Alpha Zeta’s accomplishments symbolize the hard work, dedication and perseverance amongst the members who have developed a passion to lead and succeed within the agriculture industry,” said Ferreira.

Fresno State’s chapter also won the award for the National Banner contest. The entry was chaired by Cathy Houlihan, an animal science major from Clovis, and Cristina Aceves, an ag business major from Tulare.

Vikki Hoveln, an ag business major from Oceanside, Christina Menezes, an ag education major from Atwater, and Ferreira presented a leadership workshop during the conference.

Other Fresno State conference attendees are ag education majors Brad Miranda of Prather and Ariana Hallum of Turlock; Melody Jaime, an animal science major from Manteca; Chelsea Cushing, an ag communications major from Tulare; and Julie Rose, an ag business major from Hanford.
