From plot-to-plate in less than two hours, Fresno State’s always popular hand-picked sweet corn has arrived at the Gibson Farm Market – fresh and at the peak of its quality, sweetness and tenderness.
The student product is dubbed ‘Fresno State Centennial Sweet Corn’ in honor of the university’s 100th anniversary celebration that is under way. White and yellow sweet corn of the “Vision” variety that was a big hit with Gibson customers in its debut last year will be available throughout the summer. The first bins of yellow corn rolled in Saturday in limited quantity. Now there’s lots more. The price remains at 4 ears for $1.
“We will have plenty of corn,” said Dr. Ganesan Srinivasan, director of the University Agricultural Laboratory, which consists of 25 enterprises including the Gibson Farm Market. “We expect to pick 1.5 million ears of corn this year, which sounds like a lot but works out to only 2.5 ears for every Fresnan for the entire season if they chose to buy Fresno State corn.”
White corn is scheduled to arrive on Thursday, Srinivasan said.
“This year’s corn arrived two weeks late due to cooler weather but the quality is excellent,” he said. “We hope to have corn until Labor Day and beyond.”
The university’s farm operation is also looking ahead to several attractions headlined by The Fresno State Summer Harvest Festival at the Gibson Farm Market on July 10. The market also features wine tastings every Saturday, ice cream tastings the second Tuesday of the month and the Fresno State Bulldog Chop Shop meat counter on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Farm Market is open extended hours for summer:
- Monday-Friday – 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
- Saturday – 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Sunday – 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
