Tickets are on sale for the 2010-11 University Theatre season, which begins Oct. 1 with “A Soldier’s Play” and honors the celebration of California State University, Fresno’s first 100 years with the “Centennial Symphonic Dance Project.”
Season tickets range from $115 (a patron level that includes a $50 donation to the University Theatre program) to $50 (students with valid ID). General admission is $75, with $65 season tickets available to Fresno State Alumni Association members, seniors and Fresno State faculty and staff. Individual-performance tickets ($10-$17) will go on sale Sept. 13.
The season opens with Charles Fuller’s “A Soldier’s Play,” set in World War II, which dramatizes the African American military experience and the impact of racism on black Americans. Thomas-Whit Ellis, a professor of theater arts, directs the production, which runs through Oct. 9.
Also scheduled:
- Oct. 29-Nov. 6 – “Eastern Standard” by Richard Greenberg and directed by J. Daniel Herring.
- Dec. 3-11 – “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” by Joe Landry and directed by Brad Myers.
- March 25-April 2 – “Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni and directed by Ruth Griffin.
- May 6-14 – “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams and directed by Kathleen McKinley.
The “Centennial Symphonic Dance Project,” staged Feb. 24-27 at the John Wright Theatre, is a collaboration by two programs within the university’s College of Arts and Humanities, which is home to the Department of Theatre Arts.
The event will feature the university’s Contemporary Dance Ensemble, whose artistic director is Kenneth Balint, and the Fresno State Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Loewenheim.
The season-ending “Glass Menagerie” meshes with Fresno State’s Centennial celebration, which will end just after the play’s run with the university’s 100th Commencement. After debuting in 1944, “The Glass Menagerie” was performed at Fresno State in 1950 and again in 1986.
