The 2010 Maddy Tribute on Sept. 9 will honor three outgoing California lawmakers and board members of the Kenneth L. Maddy Institute at California State University, Fresno and raise money for the institute’s programs, including the newly expanded Legislative Scholar Internships.

The tribute will toast Sen. Dave Cogdill, R-Modesto, and Assembly members Juan Arambula, Ind.-Fresno, and Mike Villines, R-Clovis.

“We want to celebrate these three legislators and their ‘profiles in courage’,” said Mark Keppler, executive director of the Maddy Institute. “We also want to ensure that the Maddy Institute is able to continue to engage, prepare and inspire the next generation of leaders in public service through programs such as our Legislative Scholar Internships. But providing such scholarships requires funding.

Some of the need can be attributed to expanding the program, which now includes qualified students attending Fresno State and the California State University campuses in Turlock, Bakersfield and San Luis Obispo and the University of California, Merced.

The program places students in government offices throughout the San Joaquin Valley, as well as in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. Students are provided with opportunities to develop public leadership skills while gaining practical knowledge of day-to-day government operations and the political process.

Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno., will be one of the emcees at the tribute in which each honoree will be toasted by two of his colleagues.

A sponsors-only reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., with event seating at 6:30 and dinner served at 7 o’clock in the Fresno Convention Center Exhibit Hall.

Prior to Aug. 1, individual tickets are $225 each, couples $400 and a table of 10 is $2,250. After Aug. 1, individual tickets are $250, couples $450 and tables $2,500. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available at www.maddyinstitute.org or 559.278.1133.
