A sculpture being created from musical instruments donated by the community for an art installation on Sunday, July 18, takes center stage during the beginning of the second group of CSU Summer Arts courses at California State University, Fresno.

CSU Summer Arts is comprised of two sets of two-week courses for students from throughout the 23-campus California State University system accompanied by public concerts, lectures, readings, exhibitions and presentations by the artists and performers teaching the courses. This is the 25th anniversary of CSU Summer Arts, which has been hosted at Fresno State for 12 summers.

One of the signature offerings this summer is the collection of musical instruments being assembled into a reactive sculpture installation by CSU Summer Arts students directed by kinetic sculptor, musician and composer Trimpin. The German-born artist, now based in Seattle, received a MacArthur Foundation “genius” award in 1997.

Trimpin will lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at the Conley Lecture Hall in the Phebe Conley Art Building. The event, which is open to the public ($10 general admission; $7 students, seniors and Fresno State faculty and staff), will include clips from the upcoming documentary film “Trimpin: The Sound of Invention.”

Installation of the sculpture at Fresno State is planned 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Conley Gallery. The public is welcome and there is no admission charge.
