The California State University announced today, July 29, that beginning Sunday, Aug. 1, all campuses will begin accepting applications for admission to the 2011 spring term.

However, the enrollment of new students for the spring term at California State University, Fresno and the other 22 CSU campuses is contingent upon passage of the state budget and the restoration of funding to the CSU.

Vivian Franco, director of Admissions, Records and Evaluations at Fresno State, said applications will be accepted in the following categories:

  • Returning upper division students: Previously enrolled at Fresno State and have completed 60 or more baccalaureate-level units.
  • Upper division transfers: Applicants who have completed all transfer admission requirements by end of summer 2010.
  • Graduate and postbaccalaureate: Applicants for graduate and credential programs.

The university is closed to applications from first-time freshmen, new or returning lower division transfers, second baccalaureate and postbaccalaureate unclassified students, she explained.

“The spring 2011 admission cycle is based upon anticipated funding to accommodate enrollment growth for 2010-11. Therefore, admission of students will be made on a space-available basis,” Franco said.

She encouraged interested students to visit the CSUMentor website – www.csumentor.edu.

CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed said that despite the uncertainty regarding state support for the 2010-2011 academic year, the CSU will move forward with the application process for spring 2011.

“The passing of the budget in a timely manner and the restoration of funding proposed by the governor will allow us to serve those students and provide immediate access for students already in the admissions pipeline,” Reed said.

The initial application period throughout the CSU for spring 2011 is Aug. 1-31. By receiving applications, campuses can begin the eligibility review process and admit qualified students if a restored state budget is passed soon, or, alternatively, hold applications pending final passage of a late budget.

The governor’s proposed budget includes the restoration of $305 million, as well as an additional $60.6 million that would fund further enrollment expansion.

There will be campuses and programs that may not be able to enroll students for the spring, and applicants are encouraged to visit the CSU Mentor website and campus websites for additional information.

Typically, the CSU enrolls more than 35,000 new students during the spring. Last year, as part of an overall strategy to address a $625 million cut in state funding, the CSU closed spring 2010 admissions systemwide.

The governor’s proposed budget, with timely approval by the Legislature, would allow CSU campuses to reverse course and to provide access in the 2010-2011 academic year to an estimated 29,000 additional students.
