California State University, Fresno is hosting the fifth Central Valley Hispanic Youth Symposium through Friday, July 23, bringing about 100 high school students to campus.

Students from Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, Stanislaus and Tulare counties are participating in the symposium at Fresno State, which focuses on empowering youth for success in college, career and community service.

Students have opportunities to connect with Hispanic mentors, attend workshops on college admissions and financial aid, compete for $10,500 in scholarship funds and meet with college admissions officers from local schools. Workshop topics include “Hispanic Heroes,” “Issues to Action,” “Realizing the College Dream,” “Foundations for Personal Success” and “Team Building.”

After the symposium, students will be enrolled in year-round programming of the Hispanic Youth Institute.

The symposium is presented by the Hispanic College Fund. Founded in 2004, the Hispanic Youth Symposium serves six cities and 1,600 students annually across the United States. The Hispanic College Fund partners with the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium for the local program.

Key symposium stakeholders are the consortium; Fresno State’s University Outreach Services, Educational Talent Search and Lyles College of Engineering; the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service Central California Consortium and Hispanic Serving Institutions national program; Social Security Administration; Lambda Theta Phi and Nu Alpha Kappa fraternities; and artist Dora Mora.

Symposium sponsors are Southwest Airlines, University of Phoenix Foundation, El Ruiz/Monterey Foods and the Fresno Regional Foundation.
