India’s consul general in San Francisco, Susmita Gongulee Thomas, will highlight the significance of the Indian community in the San Joaquin Valley during a celebration at California State University, Fresno of the 63rd anniversary of India’s Independence.

The celebration is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Satellite Student Union.

During the event, an art exhibit will pay tribute to those who fought for India’s independence from British rule. Indian classical and folk dances will also be featured as part of the celebration.

Thomas will share the stage with local, state and federal elected leaders. Guests of honor include Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, Assembly member Mike Villines (R-Clovis) and Rep. Jim Costa (D-Fresno).

Before being posted to San Francisco, Thomas’ Foreign Service career included being India’s ambassador to Chile, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Guinea and Liberia. She has served 34 years in the Foreign Service.

The Fresno State event, sponsored by local Indian organizations and the university’s Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute, is free and open to the public. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
