The California Board of Education adopted the Common Core Standards for English and math developed by a national commission of teachers, experts, parents and school administrators and adopted by 33 other states and the District of Columbia.

California State University Chancellor Charles Reed praised the action Monday, Aug. 2, as “a significant victory for California students and families,

[that] will send a clear signal of what it takes to be ready for college.”

“The rigor associated with the new standards for mathematics and English will better prepare students for college level academics, and ultimately, will speed their progress to a college degree,” Reed added.

Adopting the standards is required for consideration of grant applications to the federal Race to the Top education program offering $3.4 billion to help schools improve.
