Victor Perez, the Fresno man whose choice to get involved led to the release of an 8-year-old girl from her abductor, will be honored during Saturday’s Fresno State football game against Hawai’i.

Perez told Fresno Police he was watching television news on Tuesday morning (Oct. 5), when he saw the Amber Alert for the child and recognized the truck used in her kidnapping. He pursued the truck in his own pickup and succeeded in confronting the kidnapper, who pushed the girl out.

Perez stayed with the child and called 9-1-1, leading to the apprehension of a suspect a short time later.

David Huerta, the Fresno State police chief and director of public safety, spearheaded the university’s invitation to Perez. He said the university wants to recognize Perez’s willingness to take action as a citizen and the Fresno Police Department’s work in quickly issuing an Amber Alert for the missing child and mobilizing federal, state and local authorities.

Paul Ladwig, associate Athletics director, said that in addition to recognizing Perez on the field during halftime, the Amber Alert system, vital in informing the public of cases such as this, will be highlighted during the game.

Bulldog Athletics also will be certain Perez and his family are appropriately outfitted with Fresno State gear so they can properly cheer for a Bulldog victory.
