The first batch of turkeys donated to the “Give a Gobbler” campaign at California State University, Fresno that will be picked up by the Poverello House at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 23, reflects a drop in donations nationwide.
Volunteers from the Poverello House will pick up 44 turkeys to donate to families in need this holiday season. They will load their truck in front of the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market (Chestnut and Barstow) where donors can still purchase turkeys for donating to hungry families this season.
In its fourth year, the “Give a Gobbler” campaign has struggled to reach its goal of raising funds to donate 200 student-produced turkeys to the Community Food Bank and Poverello House for the holidays. To date, only 88 turkeys have been donated. The turkeys will be split equally to each agency.
“With a severe shortage of turkeys and higher prices, food banks all across the nation are facing a shortage of turkeys this year,” said Dr. Ganesan Srinivasan, director of University Agricultural Laboratory. “This makes our Give a Gobbler drive even more critical this year. We encourage Fresno area residents to come out and support this worthy cause.”
The drive asks donors to purchase $25 student-produced Fresno State turkeys at the Gibson Farm Market that will then be distributed to families in need during the coming holiday season.
The store hours are:
Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Sunday: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The farm market will be closed Dec. 24-26, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
