Elizabeth Davidson, a Smittcamp Honors College student at California State University, Fresno, will present her research of the Pacific sand lance Tuesday, Jan. 25, at the 2011 California State University Council on Ocean Affairs, Science and Technology (COAST) research reception in Long Beach.
Davidson, a senior Earth and Environmental Sciences major from Clovis, will be joined by Dr. Gary Greene, a Fresno State Earth and Environmental Sciences adjunct professor, and Dr. Fraka Harmsen, associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics.
Davidson researched the preferred habitat of the Pacific sand lance, an important forage fish in the Pacific Northwest, as part of a $1.4 million grant Harmsen obtained from the National Science Foundation.
The grant provides students with funding for undergraduate research experience and works to raise diversity by working with ethnic minorities, women and others from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds that are looking to work in the geosciences.
The research serves as Davidson’s senior thesis project, which is required of all Smittcamp Honors students.
COAST integrates CSU systemwide resources and promotes multi-campus collaborations to advance student and faculty knowledge of California’s natural coastal and marine resources and the processes that affect them.
