The 38th annual Chicano Youth Conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, in the Satellite Student Union at California State University, Fresno, will offer prospective students a day filled with educational and cultural workshops.

Registration is required for the event, which is sponsored by Fresno State M.E.Ch.A. and University Outreach Services, at www.gotofresnostate.com.

The conference, themed “Self Empowered Youth – Knowledge, Unity and Action,” brings more than 800 students from across the state annually. Topics include AB 540 information and resources, admission requirements and financial aid opportunities.

General interest workshops encourage students to seek opportunities for advancement through higher education.

The keynote speaker for the conference is Frances Peña-Olgin, who was the first chairperson of the event in 1972 when she was a student. Peña-Olgin is now the director of University Outreach Services and has been instrumental in the event’s success as well as helping many Latino students obtain a higher education during her 35-year career at the university.
