National Engineers Week at California State University, Fresno kicks off Wednesday, Feb. 23, with the grand opening of the Lyles College of Engineering Centennial Exhibit at noon and a seminar at 4 p.m. on California’s high speed rail project.

Other activities during the week include student presentations from Edwards Air Force Base, the MESA Saturday Academy and the annual Engineers at the Mall at Clovis’ Sierra Vista Mall Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26 and 27. All events are free and open to the public.

At the rail presentation,Thomas Tracy, regional program manager for the California High Speed Rail Authority, will discuss the proposed project at the University Dining Hall on campus. The first segment of the state high-speed rail line is proposed from Borden (near Madera) to Bakersfield.

The exhibit of photographs and engineering artifacts begins with a ceremony and refreshments served in the Leon S. Peters Ellipse Gallery of the Henry Madden Library, where the exhibit will be mounted through Friday, Feb. 25.

Following will be a presentation by Dr. Peter Kinman, NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory researcher and part-time faculty member at Fresno State, on the “History of Engineering.” Kinman teaches communications and signal processing in the Lyles College’s Department of Electrical/Computer Engineering.

Closing out opening day will be presentations at 5:30 p.m. by student interns who have worked at International Paper, Edwards Air Force Base and E. & J. Gallo Winery. They will be in the Grosse Industrial Technology Building, Room 160.

Events on Thursday begin with Dr. Ram Nunna, interim dean of the Lyles College, hosting a doughnuts and coffee social with students at 9:30 a.m. in Industrial Tech Room 160.

At 10:30 a.m., the VIP barbecue will enable engineering students to network with companies who participate in the Valley Industry Partnership (VIP) with the Lyles College. The partnership allows students to integrate planned industrial experiences into their academic programs. The event will be in front of the Engineering East Building.

From 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, students will participate in a bowling tournament at the Bowling Alley in the University Student Union. The grand prize will be a pizza party for the winning team’s major program.

The annual Engineers at the Mall event concludes Engineering Week 2011 in the Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis, with members of student engineering organizations present 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 26 and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 27. Students will demonstrate their projects and talk with community members.
